Ethos; Pathos; Logos

Benjamin Schwen
Section 17
essay #1 & essay #2 ethos; pathos; logos
8-30-2010

ESSAY #1:
Ethos:
1. “You won't believe your parents, you won't pay any attention to
your teachers and counselors, so I'II try. (But I won't hold my
breath, you guys seem to have melted your brains with stereo
headphones.)”
(page 1 ). This demonstrates an appeal to credibility by showing that she knows what its like to be a teenage girl.
2. “These days, having a career is not a choice, it's a necessity.” (page1). This demonstrates an appeal to credibility by showing wisdom of age.
3. “Why? Because you think that science and math are too difficult.” (page 2). This demonstrates an appeal to credibility by showing the reader that the author is smart enough to understand them.
4. “You will work for about 30 years of your life and if you think that school is boring, you ain’t seen nothin yet.”
(page 1 ). This demonstrates an appeal to credibility by showing the author experience and wisdom.
5. “Money is power, therefore women who earn the big bucks have more clout then women who don’t.”
(page 2). This demonstrates an appeal to credibility by once again showing the experience that the obviously much older author has.

Pathos:
1. “About 10 or 15 years from now, you are going to be working at some menial,
low-paying, miserable job and wondering what happened.”
(page 1). This demonstrates an appeal to emotion by obviously making the reader distraught to make them by closer attention.
2. “but the cold hard statistics call him a liar.” (page 1 ). This demonstrates an appeal to emotion by using descriptive words to prove the emotion behind the sentence.
3. “You think that science and math are unfeminine. That is unadulterated nonsense.”
(page 2 ). This demonstrates an appeal to emotion by making the reader feel stupid for ever thinking that.
4. “It seems unfair to have to make lifetime decisions when you're only 14 years old and the most important thing is to have a date for the grade 9 dance.” (page 3 ). This demonstrates an appeal to emotion by actually telling the reader that they need to be more focussed. Making the reader seem like they’re not as up-to-par as they maybe should be.
5. “You think they’re difficult because a society which tries to keep you in your place has led you
to believe that.” (page 2 ). This demonstrates an appeal to emotion by

Logos:
1. “Because you are being left behind even as you think that math and physics are too tough for you to take, and what difference will it make anyway?”
(page 1). This demonstrates an appeal to logic by using reasoning actually making the reader think more realistically.
2. “Over 80 per cent of women spend up to 30 years in the work force.” (page 2). This demonstrates an appeal to logic by showing data.
3. “Half of Canada's families with two wage earners bring home less
than $15,000 a year.” (page 2). This demonstrates an appeal to logic by showing data.
4. “On average, women earn 40 per cent less than men.” (page 2 ). This demonstrates an appeal to logic by showing data
5. “Most women work in clerical, secretarial or unskilled jobs.” (page ). This demonstrates an appeal to logic by explaining the truth of the types of jobs women usually pursue.

ESSAY #2:
Ethos:
1. “Drawing on a large and diverse body of research, this report presents eight recent research
findings that provide evidence that social and environmental factors contribute to the under-
representation of women in science and engineering.” (page 1). This demonstrates an appeal to credibility by this shows the legitimate representation of the writers background.
2. “While biological gender differences, yet to be well understood, may play a role, they clearly are not
the whole story.”
(page 1). This demonstrates an appeal to credibility by showing that the author(s) did put some research into what they’re writing about. Showing me (the reader) that i can trust the author(s)
3. “By creating a “growth mindset” environment, teachers and parents can encourage girls’ achievement and interest in math and science.
(page 1 ). This demonstrates an appeal to credibility by again showing the type of research put into this article.
4. “Among first-year college students, women are much less likely than men to say that they intend to major in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM)” (page 1). This demonstrates an appeal to credibility by giving a credible source from where the quote came from.
5. “When test administrators tell students that girls and boys are equally capable in math, however, the difference in performance essentially disappears, illustrating that changes in the learning environment can
improve girls’ achievement in math.
(page ). This demonstrates an appeal to credibility by showing that actual legitimate people have said this.

Pathos:
1. “That is, believing in the potential for intellectual growth, in and of itself, improves outcomes.(page 1). This demonstrates an appeal to emotion by giving the reader a sense of hope even after all the depressing statistics.
2. “where negative stereotypes persist about their abilities.”
(page 1). This demonstrates an appeal to emotion by maybe giving an example of what the author has been through. Sounded a bit harsh.
3. “Not only are people more likely to associate math and science with men than with women,
people often hold negative opinions of women in “masculine” positions, like scientists or
engineers. (page 3 ). This demonstrates an appeal to emotion by putting out an “unfair” sounding statement.
4. “When a woman is clearly competent in a “masculine” job, she is considered to be less likable.
(page 3). This demonstrates an appeal to emotion by showing how unfairly women can be treated.
5. “To diversify the STEM fields we must take a hard look at the stereotypes and biases that
still pervade our culture.”
(page ). This demonstrates an appeal to emotion by the author really using some determined wording to get the point across.

Logos:
1. “The number of women in science and engineering is growing, yet men continue to outnumber women, especially at the upper levels of these professions.”
(page 1 ). This demonstrates an appeal to logic by showing the reader a true statistic.
2. “Among first-year college students, women are much less likely than men to say that they intend to major in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM). (page 1). This demonstrates an appeal to logic by showing more evidence of what women are doing with their education, then that of a man.
3. “By graduation, men outnumber women in nearly every science and engineering field, and in some, such as physics, engineering, and computer science, the difference is dramatic, with women only earning 20 percent of bachelor degrees
(page 1). This demonstrates an appeal to logic by showing another statistic to prove the point.
4. “Thirty years ago there were 13 boys for every girl who scored above 700 on the SAT math exam at age 13; today that ratio has shrunk to about 3:1.”
(page 1). This demonstrates an appeal to logic by showing a difference in statistics throughout the years.
5. “Most people associate science and math fields with “male” and humanities and arts fields with
“female,” according to research examined in this report.”
(page ). This demonstrates an appeal to logic by showing a difference in how society views the sexes.

I think that the second essay was much more persuasive then the first. There are quite a few reasons why. First, essay #1 felt like i was being talked down to the whole time or like i was an 8th grade girl. That basically turned me off from the beginning. Second, the first essay had more of an emotional appeal. Everything that was said was basically taken straight out of the authors personal life experience. She proved her points through using emotional sentences like “It seems unfair to have to make lifetime decisions when you're only 14 years old and the most important thing is to have a date for the grade 9 dance”. This doesn't appeal to me at all because I've never been in that situation. Last, essay #2 had plenty of facts to back up research. This not only demonstrates logic, but it demonstrates credibility because I find sources that do the most research to be the most credible. Also, the second essay did have a pretty emotional ending, which put the point across even more solidly. The second made me think about the overall subject much more and persuaded me to not judge women as much in the (STEM) fields.

"One could do worse then be a collector of boxes."

I read the essay by Barbara Ascher called, "The Box Man".  It's about how a homeless man views loneliness and so many quotes in the story stood out to me.  Here are a few-

"He let the imagination hold sway."

"The box man knows that loneliness chosen loses its sting and claims no victims."

"True love finds many ways, but no escape from exile."

"We might as well draw the night around us and find solace there and a friends in our own voice."

Why Online Instruction is Important in English Class
08/27/2010

Online skills and training are probably the most beneficial ways to become more acquainted with the ever growing technological world.  Everything on this earth is only getting more and more reliable on technology.  I believe computers and the internet will eventually be in place of class rooms world wide.
It is critical to know how to use the internet these days.  The internet has been used in every job position i've ever had and in everyday life as well.  One thing that has always been a keystone in internet usage is user interaction and networking.  From blogs to instant messaging and even to using the phone, all can be done using this wonderfully easy to use invention.
Blogging is a form of networking via internet. This a great way to express thoughts, feelings, opinions, ideas, etc.  Opening the educational world to this can only improve our society and fast paced way of thinking.  Not only does a blog make you feel like your writing in your own journal but it has the ability to let other users see who you are and what your all about.  Now when having the certain comfort level that your computer chair gives you, i believe that you are able to open up more to what you are trying to put out.  Expressing thoughts and ideas become easier with a blog because the blog allows you to post music, videos, pictures and more to help get a point across.  A blog isn't only beneficial for me as the student though.  It also provides a way for the professor to put out assignments, tests, etc. thats more accessible to a wide variety of students.
To sum it all up, using online instruction can help with sharing opinions, networking, instruction accessibility and even give you skills to move forward with a better career path.
